Christmas tree in Vilnius Cathedral Square, 2013

The Christmas day is over but it is hopefully not too late to post a beautiful Christmas tree image 🙂 The New Year celebrations are approaching fast and the Vilnius city centre is bustling with people. This year the Christmas tree decoration in Vilnius has received special attention not only from the national media; it has been featured in a slightly satirical CNN article as one of the most impressive in the world. The 25m tall installation does indeed look impressive in the Cathedral square against a deep blue evening sky backdrop.

The photos were taken on a Christmas day evening as crowds gathered to visit the market stalls and listen to the concert. It was a busy day, but the atmosphere was cheerful and festive. I also explored a complementary vertical composition; here my eye was caught by the light reflections on the pavement. It was also my first real use of the new Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L USM II lens and I must say I am thoroughly impressed. It is incredibly sharp, contrasty and produces amazing sunstars like no other lens I used before. I have already used for portraits and events and it was just right. It is certainly a keeper.

I also decided here to revisit a couple other images from the same location taken in daytime during the summer. If you are planning your visit the Cathedral square and the Old town are a must do.
